"Square Peg in a Round Hole"

A welder by trade, Hagen says he was "working on some metal one day and it just kind of turned into art." Now the 40-year-old Iowa native makes a living selling his abstract metallic fragments on eBay. For his ornament, Hagen was inspired by holiday stress. "You have to bend and accommodate people and things," he says. "So I took a hammer and I beat a peg through a hole, not knowing how it would come out -- just like people do with life sometimes."

"Budgie in a Pear Tree"

The life of Karen Wheeler, 54, has been one ceaseless battle against muscular dystrophy. Art, she says, helps her cope. "It's my one voice of independence," says the wheelchair-bound Kansas native, who picked up her first brush at age 4. "Nobody can help me with this stuff. I need help with almost everything else." Wheeler's ornament stars Spanky, her 8-year-old parakeet (or, as they say in Britain, "budgie"). Wheeler recently noticed how similar Spanky's shape was to a pear's. "I've done other paintings with him," Wheeler says. "I prefer painting humorous things, because if I can generate positivity by what I do, it reflects in how I feel."

Art Featured in Las Vegas Sunday Paper

Hi All,
Happy Holidays!
Karen Wheeler and me were featured artists in the Las Vegas Paper. We were both happy with the results. The article came out Sunday.
Monday, I had a collector come over and purchase the featured work and 2 others. The "square peg in a round hole" really connected with her, and that just makes me feel good.
Her comment, "That is really all of us."

The kicker is my little concept changed her Christmas.. She thought that now, she had an ornament, she would go buy a tree!

This is a angel fish out of aluminum. I really enjoyed making this and will do some more. I felt I could use my bright colors because it is an angel fish. It dances when the light hits it. It measures 14" X 13" and its painted on both sides.

"Jet Blue #14"

"Jet Blue" #14- This image was inspired by the Jet Blue emergency landing on September 22, 2005. This is an image that I really enjoy working on. It is a cross on a hill, overlooking the water. I made my first "Jet Blue" after the emergency landing of the plane that had its front landing gear stuck sideways. I was watching this on the news and the plane had been up in the air a few hours burning off fuel. It came time for the emergency landing, and right before the landing, the local anchor said "lets say a prayer for them." And he bowed his head and was silent for a moment, I said a prayer too. I had not prayed in a long time. The plane landed with lots of sparks, but everybody was safe. It happened right around the news hour and the channels carried it live while they gave the news. I’m not a huge religious person, but I did pray that day, and I hadn’t in a long time. And, who knows if the anchor was sincere or not. Anyway, that night I made this image, and I really enjoy sculpting it. It gives me a calming feeling when I work on it. This is the biggest one that I have done. The last thing that I do is sculpt the cross on it, I get nervous about doing it. If I screw it up I just have to start all over again.

While satellite TV sets aboard JetBlue Flight 292 were tuned to news broadcasts, some passengers cried. Others tried to telephone relatives and one woman sent a text message to her mother in Florida attempting to comfort her in the event she died.
"It was very weird. It would've been so much calmer without" the televisions, Pia Varma of Los Angeles said after the plane skidded to a safe landing Wednesday evening in a stream of sparks and burning tires. No one was hurt.

The bottom photo is a reflection from the lense, but I thought it was kind of cool.

I really didn't know if I liked this when I finished it. It hung on my wall for awhile and I really got to like it. It, too is part of my series based on the Willow Beach lookout area. I tend to use really bright colors, but this is Las Vegas. In my case, the environment consisting of the man made and natural combines for my to get images in my head.

I moved here over 4 years ago and I'm still amazed with this place. One of the hidden facts about Vegas is the natural wonders that are just outside of town. The tourist don't know about these, the casinos don't want you to leave their property! And because its not advertised, the locals have a hard time finding them, too. Any direction that you drive and there is something to see. I'm big on going on day trips and seeing the local sites.

I have started a series of paintings that have "West" in the title. I'm inspired by a certain area that is East of the Hoover Dam about 7 miles and overlooks the Colorado River, Which to be technical is Lake Mojave. I really enjoy going to the lookout and look back west as the mountains stack up on each other. I just keep that vision in my head.

I found two pictures that I took the day after my Daughter was born. It was nice to go there and think about the future.

hi, I'm Jeff Hagen and I'm an artist in Las Vegas. Have you been here? Ok, you went to the strip but, there are a lot of other places around Las Vegas. I hope to post some pics. Some places that I find interesting. Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, Chloride AZ, Chocholate factory, Top of the World restuarant (Strataphere); Boulder City, Red Rock, Sunset Park, Airport runway, Neonopolis, Zion, Death Valley, Willow Beach, Atomic Museum, Huge Morman Chapel, Floyd Lamb State Park, anyway, you get the idea. There are just a ton of places to see.
